From what age can a child use it?
You should start using sunscreen when your baby is 6 months old, before this age you should avoid all exposure to the sun by keeping them in the shade, covering their body in light clothing, and getting them to wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
If your child is over 6 months, you can apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to exposed skin, according to the instructions on the product label.
When outdoors, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or as often as the label says.
-
Are sunscreens safe?
Using sunscreen, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing are all important behaviours that can reduce the risk of skin cancer. Scientific evidence supports the benefits of using sunscreen to minimize short-term and long-term damage to the skin. Any claims that sunscreen is toxic or hazardous have not been proven. If you’re concerned about certain ingredients, you can select formulas with different active ingredients.
